Cataracts are the main cause of blindness and visual impairment worldwide, therefore cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed by ophthalmologists. Currently, the most preferred surgical techniques are extracapsular cataract extraction, phacoemulsification and small incision surgery. The phacoemulsification technique has the advantage of being able to remove the lens with a smaller incision, eliminating the needs stitching and has a faster recovery time.
The rapid development of technology and the magnitude of the challenges faced require the medical world, especially ophthalmologist education centers to always innovate and improve themselves in order to produce graduates who can compete in the modern era. One example of this effort is by providing added value in the form of cataract surgery skills with phacoemulsification.
This phacoemulsification training started in 2015, with 57 participants and 49 young members of the Central Java Perdami. This training is carried out regularly every year. It was originally intented for academics of Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University. However, due to its great benefits, other opthalmologists are welcome to join. At the end of 2021, the Grand Opening Phaco Training Center was held at Central Laboratorium Medical Faculty Diponegoro University, and will be carried out on an ongoing basis there.
Undip's Phaco Training Center (PTC) is a training center for cataract surgery skills with phacoemulsification to improve the quality of individual skills of eye specialists and ophthalmology residents. We have a mission to be able to organize structured phaco training and facilitate ophthalmologists and ophthalmology residents to achieve phacoemulsification competence so that our vision can be fulfilled, that is to become an International Standardized PTC (ICO) by 2024.
