Cataracts are the main cause of blindness and visual impairment worldwide, therefore cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed by ophthalmologists. The blindness rate in Indonesia is the highest at 1.5% of the total population (about 3.6 million people) compared to the blindness rate in countries in the Southeast Asia Region. The main cause is cataracts, with 2 millions and increase 240 thousands new cases every year.

With the technology trend rising very fast, medical world need to innovate and adapt quickly as well, especially ophthalmologist education centers to always innovate and improve themselves in order to produce graduates who can compete in the modern era. One way that can be taken is to provide added value in the form of cataract surgery skills with phacoemulsification.
In February 2021, the Ophthalmology Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University held basic phacoemulsification training for KSM Eye supervisors and final year residents. This activity was held on 8-11 February 2021 at the Diponegoro National Hospital.

The activities that being done in the event such as wetlab phacoemulsification surgery which were guided by 5 trainers, namely dr. A. Kentar Arimadyo Sulakso, Msi.Med., Sp.M(K), dr. A. Rizal Fanany, Sp.M(K), dr. Afrisal Hari Kurniawan, Sp.M(K), dr. Arief Wildan, Msi.Med., Sp.M(K), and dr. Wisnu Sadasih, Sp.M(K) to train 32 participants who were divided into 8 groups. The division into small groups is intended so that participants able to receive the training program more privately and so the trainers can focus more on providing training materials.
